The Association of Emerging Linguists invited young and/or student linguists to participate in the Emerging Linguists Workshop at the 47th Austrian Linguistics Conference .
Our workshop had no thematic focus, so contributions from all areas of linguistics were welcome. A total of nine emerging linguists had the opportunity to present their work. We would like to thank all the presenters for being there and making the workshop what it was: wonderful, thanks to you <3.

| Aja Čelhar | Just How Much Maisie Knew: The Role of Metaphors and Similes in Narrating a Child’s Worldview (en) The presentation looks at the contrast between using metaphors and similes in narrating a child’s point of view in literature by analysing Henry James’ What Maisie Knew in order to open a more general discussion about projecting fictional minds. | Jana Dietzel | Stil und Metaphorik der Psychoanalyse: Genese einer Fachsprache (de) Im Rahmen meines Vortrags werde ich eine Metaphernanalyse fachsprachlicher Texte im Kontext der Entstehung der Freud‘schen Psychoanalyse vorstellen. Dabei lege ich einen kognitionslinguistischen Ansatz zugrunde und werde insbesondere die historische und epistemische Kontextualisierung hervorheben, die mit der Untersuchung der Metaphern einhergeht. Der Vortrag wird sich auf Sigmund Freuds Werk ‚Die Traumdeutung‘ (1900) konzentrieren. Es werden Analyseausschnitte vorgestellt und die Erkenntnisse hieraus exemplarisch dargelegt. | Hanna Dopler & Hannah Lechner | „Auf Deutsch sind manche Sachen schwer zu sagen, die wichtig zu sagen sind.“ Praktiken sprachlicher Aneignung und queere Identitätskonstruktion (de) Ausgehend von Sprachenportraits und narrativen Interviews werden wir uns in unserem Vortrag mit kommunikativen Praktiken queerer Identitätskonstruktion beschäftigen: mit den visuellen, kreativen Auseinandersetzungen mit und Darstellungen dieser, mit der transformierenden, subversiven Aneignung bestimmter Kategorien und Begriffe, mit Sprach- bzw. Varietätenwechsel usw. | David Košić | Aesthetic perception and memorability of phonemes as a potential factor in the formation of languages’ phoneme inventory (en) This study delves into the interplay between word memorability and aesthetic appeal. Participants memorized pseudowords categorized as appealing, neutral, or unappealing. The results revealed that appealing and neutral pseudowords were more memorable than unappealing ones, suggesting a link between aesthetic perception and word memorability. | Lisza-Sophie Neumeier | English in the lives of Austrian youth: Second language engagement and enjoyment in recreational, professional and educational contexts (en) The presentation will focus on the project’s findings regarding the importance of English in the lives of Austrian youth. First, the role of English in Austria will be highlighted, followed by overviews of informal second language learning (ISLL) and foreign language enjoyment (FLE). Secondly, the RQs and methodology will be presented. Thirdly, the most important findings on English use in Austrian recreational, educational and professional settings as well as the relationship between ISLL and FLE among young adults will be presented.
